Construction of the new Station Street pedestrian mall is now underway, marking a major milestone in the revitalisation of the heart of Blaxland.
The upgrade will transform the existing thoroughfare into a vibrant new town square and community gathering space.
The works will include new paving and accessibility improvements, upgraded lighting and seating, landscaping, improved signage and wayfinding, and the installation of public art.
Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the project represents a significant investment in the future of Blaxland.
“This is an exciting milestone for Blaxland and the wider Blue Mountains community, with construction now underway on a project that will create a more attractive, accessible and people friendly town centre," he said.
“The long-term benefits of these improvements will be substantial, creating a more welcoming place for people to meet, spend time, support local businesses and participate in community life.”
While every effort will be made to minimise impacts, community members should expect some temporary changes during construction, including modified pedestrian access arrangements, construction fencing, delivery vehicle movements and periods of construction noise.
“We know construction can be inconvenient at times, particularly for nearby traders. Council and the contractor will continue to work closely with the community to minimise disruption and maintain safe access through the town centre during the works,” Greenhill said.
Council is encouraging residents, business owners and visitors to stay informed throughout the project by subscribing to receive regular email updates, or by dropping in to Blaxland Library during advertised drop-in sessions throughout the construction period.
The drop-in sessions will provide an opportunity to ask questions, receive updates on the progress of the works and raise any concerns with members of the project team.
Council was awarded funding via the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program to deliver the improvements at Blaxland. This is in addition to funding for improvements at Katoomba, Glenbrook and Hazelbrook.
Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle MP said: “This is all about transforming Blaxland. The NSW Government is spending more than $3.38 million to improve Blaxland’s liveability. Now residents are able to see shovels in the ground.
“I’m excited that Blue Mountains City Council’s successful funding application will ensure that Blaxland becomes a more vibrant and bustling place, for residents’ and tourists alike.”
The upgrade project is phase one in the delivery of the Blaxland Masterplan, which was adopted by Council in 2024, following extensive community consultation.
Work is underway on planning for phase two which involves redevelopment of the IGA supermarket and car park and will include underground parking and a new piazza-style town square.
