Here’s a radical business strategy: Stop looking for new customers.
At least for a moment.
I know, that sounds ridiculous coming from a business advisor. But hear me out.
I’m certainly not suggesting you stop the marketing that’s working. That momentum takes years to build, and you want to keep it going.
But business owners spend enormous amounts of time, energy and money chasing their next customer, while some of their greatest profit opportunities are sitting right under their noses.
The problem isn’t always that you need more sales. Sometimes, you need to get better at making money from the sales you’ve already got.
Before spending another dollar chasing new business, consider these five opportunities.
1. Increase your prices. When did you last review them? I know business confidence is low, but if your gross profit margins aren’t healthy, a price increase may be essential, not optional. Don’t automatically assume customers will leave.
2. Sell more to existing customers. What else do they need that you could genuinely provide? Additional services, complementary products or ongoing support. You’ve already earned their trust. Build on it.
3. Improve your gross profit. Review supplier costs, staff productivity, wasted materials and rework. Small improvements across multiple jobs can add up to serious money.
4. Eliminate scope creep. Those little extras, additional requests and unpaid hours are quietly eating your profit. Define what’s included and charge appropriately for anything additional.
5. Make better use of your capacity. Could your team deliver more with the same resources? Improve processes, remove bottlenecks and reduce wasted time.
Choose one area this week. Calculate what a five per cent improvement could mean over the next 12 months. Then take action.
Financially Unshakeable businesses focus on turning hard work into healthy profits.
Of course, attracting new customers matters. But before you grow your business, make sure you’ve made the most of the one you’ve already built.
