Everyone’s favourite band of undersea critters is coming to the Blue Mountains Theatre this October with ‘The Spongebob Musical’, presented by the Blue Mountains Musical Society (BMMS).
Showcasing the characters we all know and love, the musical follows a new storyline, in which Spongebob and his friends Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr Krabs and more, must work together to save the town of Bikini Bottom from an impending volcanic eruption.
Long-time BMMS member Linda Aubrecht is directing the show, which will be the third feather in her director’s cap.
“I really like to figure out creative challenges and this show in particular is one of the more creative ones I’ve ever worked on,” Aubrecht said.
Opening in Chicago in 2016, ‘The Spongebob Musical’ has enjoyed international success, touring throughout the US, Germany, the UK and more.
“A lot of my musical theatre nerd friends were super excited about the prospect of doing the show. When BMMS’ favourite performers are excited to audition for a show, you know there’s something special there,” Aubrecht shared.
Aside from bringing beloved cartoon characters to the stage, what sets this show apart is the soundtrack, featuring songs written by David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, the Plain White T’s, John Legend and so many more. The contemporary and dynamic score brings together an eclectic mix of musical styles, adding depth, energy and plenty of surprises to this colourful underwater adventure.
Bringing the vibrant world of Bikini Bottom to life on stage has seen the BMMS cast shine, particularly when it comes to capturing the larger-than-life personalities of the show’s characters.
“I’m enjoying all the scenes in between [the music] where we see our actors and our performers just completely letting loose and bringing these characters to life, they’re so funny,” Aubrecht said.
While the show is packed with the humour and heart audiences have come to associate with Spongebob, audiences don’t need to be lifelong fans of the cartoon to enjoy the musical.
“It’s definitely not just a kids show. In fact, some of the themes in the storyline are kind of little jokes only grown-ups would get, which is also really fun,” Aubrecht laughed.
From jabs at politics and media to the classic silliness we all know and love, this show is sure to be enjoyed by all.
With a colourful cast, energetic choreography and a soundtrack that spans everything from pop and rap to gospel and musical theatre, ‘The SpongeBob Musical’ promises to be anything but a quiet day in Bikini Bottom. For BMMS, it’s also an opportunity to bring something a little different to the Blue Mountains stage.
