Blue Mountains City Council has secured a $12.5 million Special Purpose Grant from the Australian Government to deliver major road upgrades along Megalong Road, Megalong Valley and Railway Parade, between Bullaburra and Wentworth Falls.

The extensive package of works includes heavy patching, road resealing, rehabilitation, and targeted drainage, kerb and gutter upgrades to improve road safety and durability.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the funding was a significant investment in the region’s transport network and would benefit residents, businesses and emergency services.

“This funding allows Council to deliver much-needed upgrades to some of our most important local roads and will help to ensure they remain safe and reliable for the community,” Greenhill said.

“These roads are essential connections for local communities and emergency access, and improving their condition strengthens our region’s resilience."

The Megalong Road upgrades will improve an approximately 8.4km stretch of road, between Blackheath Glen Reserve Campground and Old Ford Reserve Campground, and is anticipated to take between six to eight months to complete.

The works on Railway Parade, between Blaxland Road in Wentworth Falls and Hay Street in Bullaburra, are expected to take between eight to ten weeks, weather permitting.

The works program will be staged to minimise disruption, with one traffic lane to remain open, and traffic controls in place near work zones.

Greenhill thanked the community for their patience during construction.

“We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we appreciate the cooperation of residents and road users while these important improvements are delivered,” Greenhill said.

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman MP said: “By fully funding these major upgrades, the Australian Government is ensuring these essential links, especially Megalong Road, remain open and safe, supporting the local economy and keeping our Blue Mountains communities connected.

“These upgrades will significantly improve road safety and efficiency, making the daily commute easier for locals and the journey safer for the many tourists who visit our world heritage region.”
